Bone Conduction Aids
Bone Conduction Hearing Aids (BAHA)
The bone conduction hearing aids are commonly refered to as the BAHA, however, BAHA is a brand. The BAHA is surgically attached, but other bone conduction hearing aids can be used without surgery. What it does, is that it captures sounds and vibrates sounds through the bone, into the cochlea, giving hearing. Bone conduction hearing aids skip the middle and outer ear via this method of sending it to the cochlea. Many children that have a temporary ear problem use this method, however, it is less common.
Parts
The BAHA consists of an exoskeleton, an outer and inner magnet, and a small titanium screw. The screw is first inserted into your mastoid bone, and then they add the inner magnet. The skin is stitched back up, The outer magnet is attached to a chip, which is covered with the hard exoskeleton. The non-surgically implanted one consists of just the exoskeleton and chip. Most non-surgically implanted ones are worn on a headband by young children.
